I think the words I most commonly mis-spell are:
1. Necessarily
2. Guaranteed
3. As opposed (I always combine it to one word)
4. Partially
5. Individual
(I may or may not have a note on my desktop with these words written on it :p)
I regularly use Google to fix my spelling - ahhh the joys of technology!
One word that never fails to trip me up is quiet versus quite. While editing the MS, the amount of times my beta's have picked up I've used the wrong one is amazing! I've lost count!
I've spoken about my awful spelling before, and despite that being over a year ago, I still can't spell!
I think as I'm getting older (okay okay, I know I'm not old, but it was either that or 'growing up' and I think I'm past that too!) I've just become lazy, because I know that Google is only one click away. I don't actually need to know how to spell anything any more.
Saying that, I did apply for a job and in the interview, they gave me a written test.
Included on it was math problems and, you guessed it, spelling words!
You had to circle the correct spelling of various words, including chandelier.
I've always remembered that one in particular as I'm pretty sure I didn't get it right! Sad too, as my parents have chandeliers in their house!
(Just on that test too, I thanked my lucky stars that day that I tutor kids, and thus know how to work out addition and subtraction the way long with borrowing etc!! Doubt I would have remembered otherwise!)
What can't you spell?
I'm a good speller, but a bad typist! thkans for your blog. :)
ReplyDeleteMy typing brain has thoughts of it's own. It often thinks I want to type the word bridge when I really mean bride for example.
ReplyDeleteOh Megan I can't spell 'guaranteed' either. Nor can I spell 'bureaucracy'. I also love the hilarious things one writes in the frenzy of creation. In my new book, I wrote that the little mouse 'battered' her eyelashes! The ms went through two senior editors and a proofreader and finally I picked it up at final pages! It was very funny (and just a bit scary) What if it had gone to print?? Yikes! jxx
